#7 Coming of Age Day
One of the tasks or exercises we do in our lessons is for a student to explain Japanese culture to a foreigner. Because 成人の日 is coming up soon, many students were able to tell me about this holiday. They also shared their experiences and even showed some pictures.
It makes my job very interesting!
I also help them explain some of the concepts and ideas in English, and compare their culture with my own culture, as well as the culture of other countries. We learned that 成人の日translates as “Coming of Age Day.” The expression “coming of age” describes the transition from childhood to adulthood. There are similar celebrations or traditions all over the world, such as America’s “Sweet 16” or the Jewish “Bar or Bat Mitzvah.”
